President-elect Donald Trump has selected a charter school
advocate and GOP donor from Michigan to be education secretary.
Betsy DeVos becomes the second woman chosen to fill a spot
in Trump's Cabinet. Earlier Wednesday, Trump named South Carolina Gov. Nikki
Haley as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations earlier in the day.
Both selections require Senate confirmation.
Trump called DeVos "a brilliant and passionate education
advocate."
According to reports from Fox news and others, DeVos heads the advocacy group American Federation for
Children. She's known for supporting charter schools and vouchers.
While this can be potentially good news to parochial schools - which includes Yeshivot - there have been conservatives who are complaining about DeVos' ties to the political establishment.
Additionally, they also warned
that she previously supported Common Core standards that Trump railed against
during the campaign.
Furthermore, as reported by Politico, Betsy DeVos told The Washington Examiner in March that she
didn’t think Trump “represents the Republican Party” and she again declined to
support Trump during the Republican National Convention, instead casting her vote for
Gov. John Kasich.
Its interesting to see how Trump picks his cabinet, especially those who were so uncompromising with a Trump presidency over the last two years of the election season.
I guess only time will tell how this plays out.
